In an area with a relatively short frost-free growing season, a western Quebec farm family is using several strategies to extend the grazing season as long as possible for their cow-calf and direct marketing beef operations. The family runs two enterprises near Dupuy in the Abitibi-Quest region of Quebec: Ferme Lafontaine-Noel, a cow-calf operation, and Ecoboeuf, which produces grass-fed beef.

Even though its ecological footprint is smaller than other economic activities, such as transportation, which is responsible for more than 40% of the province's emissions, the agricultural sector is working hard to find solutions to improve the situation. This led to the creation in 2019 of Écoboeuf , a company based in Dupuy in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region with ambitious goals: to ensure sustainable and carbon-neutral beef production, as well as the long-term viability of the agricultural industry in the region.

Approximately 1.3 billion tons of food produced worldwide are wasted each year. This waste, originating from both consumers and the production chain, has environmental and economic impacts. These losses also occur in less obvious forms. Small-scale initiatives are being implemented to mitigate this phenomenon.

Meat production has a significant environmental impact. In response to the environmental emergency, a pair of agronomists launched Écoboeuf, a grass-fed beef company operating on a carbon-neutral farm. "During my studies, I began to question the impact of animal production on the environment," explains Simon Lafontaine, now a doctoral candidate at Université Laval.
